In contrast with the dynamic nature of the common areas, the new guestroom is unequivocally meant to be a serene, personal space. It is supposed to evoke a nautical calmness, a watery stillness – an unrushed, peacefully slack mainsail. The room is purposely devoid of ornament, relying on abstracted nautical references and moderate use of choreographed light. In lieu of artwork, a taut backlit sail stretches over a teak deck headboard spans the entire length of the headboard wall. With all lights off, other than the sail light, the room evokes a primal emotion, the sight of first light on an emerging, peaceful horizon. The case goods are crafted by the hand of a seasoned boat builder. Fine metals, a tripod lamp, leather details and dovetail joinery, all allude to a captain’s quarters.

The balcony was once a corridor; its doors were once small windows which offered no privacy as other guests walked by. The room now extends out to the balcony, a continuous carpet making a typical room feel like a junior suite. Conventional outside seating is replaced by custom indoor loungers, with backs featuring bold racing numbers. The balconies themselves were created by adding oversized, bowed wood masts into the atrium. These are connected at each balcony edge with stainless steel standoffs and stretch a canvas wall, a simple continuation of the backlit headboard canvas, inextricably linking the interior and exterior spaces. The least appealing rooms in the property, the ugly ducklings, became the most coveted.
